Home cooking is the best cooking.

On the final play of BYU’s 28-24 home upset of No. 2 Notre Dame, the officials didn’t throw a flag for what appeared to be defensive pass interference. Beyond that, one second remained on the clock after the incomplete pass hit the ground.

The clock in the end zone showed one second. The stadium clock showed one second.

Although the DPI non-call was discussed on the broadcast, there was not a single mention of the fact that the game wasn’t over after the failed first-and-goal play.

One second remained. Notre Dame should have had one last chance to try to win the game.

It happened six weeks after a controversial decision in Michigan to use replay review to restore time on the clock. In this situation, no effort was made to fix the obvious fact that the game was declared to be over when it was not.

Yes, any team that puts itself in a close game risks being on the wrong side of a screwy outcome. Regardless, Notre Dame got screwed in two different ways on the last play of Saturday night’s game.

Which shouldn’t have been the last play of the game.

BYU was ahead after 59 minutes and 59 seconds. We’ll never know what would have happened if the last second of the game had been played.
