Another week, another piece of significant injury news for the Rams. Free agency pickup Jaylen Watson will not return this season. Sean McVay said (via the Los Angeles Times’ Gary Klein) veteran cornerback will undergo shoulder surgery.
The Rams gave Watson a three-year, $51MM contract in free agency, reuniting him with four-year Chiefs teammate Trent McDuffie. Watson has been a much shakier bet than McDuffie this season, missing time previously. The former McDuffie Kansas City sidekick will be out of the picture for the Rams until 2027.
Watson’s competitive FA market gave him contract protection. PFR’s No. 13-ranked 2026 free agent (and No. 2 CB in this class), Watson’s 2027 compensation is guaranteed. But this removes a key piece from a Rams puzzle that has not come together this season.
Watson joins Davante Adams, Myles Garrett and Kobie Turner on IR. Garrett, however, is practicing today after being designated for return. As the Rams’ pass rush moves closer to full strength, they will need answers in coverage.
Los Angeles has Josh Wallace as a boundary option post-Watson. Pro Football Focus has viewed Watson’s coverage work well early in his Rams tenure, ranking him seventh overall among corners (McDuffie sits second). PFF ranks Wallace ninth at the position. The Rams have used Wallace extensively inside and outside. A setup in which Wallace complements McDuffie on the boundary while Quentin Lake focuses on the slot figures to be considered in the wake of the Watson news.
Wallace has logged 137 slot snaps and 198 on the perimeter, per PFF, which has Lake at 135 slot snaps and 191 at free safety. The Rams have Kamren Curl and Kamren Kinchens as safety regulars, though the latter has only been a part-time starter this year. Kinchens, a 2024 third-round pick, figures to see more time via the domino effect coming out of the Watson injury. Lake was primarily an L.A. slot patrolman last season, logging 423 snaps there en route to an extension.
The Rams have McDuffie, Watson, Curl and Lake on eight-figure-per-year contracts. A 2024 UDFA, Wallace will be a key performer in this pricey secondary moving forward. As for Watson, this continues an injury trend for the seventh-round success story. The 28-year-old cover man missed Week 4 with shoulder trouble but returned in Week 5. He had played in each Rams game since, but his Chiefs tenure brought a significant setback.
L’Jarius Sneed’s tag-and-trade transaction in 2024 was set to usher Watson into a full-time role, but a fractured fibula spoiled his 2024 season. Watson did return from IR late in the Chiefs’ most recent AFC championship campaign, and he built a strong market with quality play in 2025. The Rams will need to wait until 2027 to see their preferred CB tandem together once again.
