The Bears’ official depth chart lists four different players as the co-No. 1 left tackles. Bears left guard Joe Thuney would like to know which one will actually be next to him when the Bears start the regular season.
Bears head coach Ben Johnson acknowledged that it’s tough on Thuney that he doesn’t know which of the four candidates — Braxton Jones, Jedrick Wills, Kiran Amegadjie and Ozzy Trapilo — he’s going to be working with on September 13 against the Panthers.
“I think Joe would like some clarity on who he can build a rapport with,” Johnson said. “It’s been a little bit of a revolving door. He’s a pro’s pro and he’s willing to do everything, but you want five guys playing as one. We’ll go as long as we need to to figure out who those five are, but at the same time, the sooner we can make that decision, the sooner they can jell as a unit as well. Last year it took us until the bye week before we started clicking as an offensive line and the run game came alive the way we wanted. I think he’s doing a great job. The communication is a huge piece of it.”
Asked if Thuney has any say in who the starting left tackle will be, Johnson said that the only determining factor will be which one of them puts together the best tape in training camp and the preseason.
“We judge it off the tape,” Johnson said. “The tape tells us everything we need to know.”
