It was learned ahead of the weekend that Indianapolis Colts backup quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr. was charged with a misdemeanor for possession of marijuana following a traffic stop that occurred in Carmel, Indiana, on Oct. 12.
As NFL insider Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk noted, Richardson could be disciplined under the league’s substance-abuse policy due to Indiana’s marijuana laws. Nevertheless, Richardson suggested following the Colts’ 16-10 loss at the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday afternoon that he has no regrets about the situation.
Anthony Richardson Sr.: “I don’t really regret a lot of things I do”
“I enjoy life,” Richardson said, per James Boyd of The Athletic. “I don’t really regret a lot of things I do. I appreciate my life. I appreciate God waking me up every morning (and) getting to live a life. So, I appreciate that. I don’t really regret anything I do.”
Former Colts general manager Chris Ballard made Richardson the fourth overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft, but Richardson hasn’t started a regular-season game since the 2024 campaign. Colts owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon fired Ballard following the club’s Week 6 loss to the previously winless Tennessee Titans, and many believe Indianapolis head coach Shane Steichen will be dismissed either during or after the season.
The Colts fell to 2-5 on Sunday.
“Since it’s an ongoing legal matter, I’m not really gonna get into details with it,” Richardson added about the possession of marijuana charge.
Will Anthony Richardson Sr. play again before his rookie contract expires?
While Colts starting quarterback Daniel Jones has largely left much to be desired with his play this fall, Steichen revealed after Sunday’s loss that Jones will start when the Colts play at the 4-2 Jacksonville Jaguars on Nov. 1. There’s no indication that a team will send the Colts anything of note for Richardson’s services before the trade deadline arrives on Nov. 10, so either he or fellow backup Riley Leonard could presumably replace Jones as the club’s starter at some point in November.
Richardson is in the final year of his rookie contract, and it would be shocking as of Oct. 26 if he were with the Colts at this time next year. Meanwhile, DraftKings Sportsbook had the Colts as 7.5-point road underdogs against the Jaguars as of Monday afternoon.
