A Wednesday report suggested that it wouldn’t be a “surprise” if the New York Giants acquired star running back Jonathan Taylor from the Indianapolis Colts before the NFL trade deadline arrives at 4:00 p.m. ET on Nov. 10.
It’s believed that Giants head coach and true head of football operations John Harbaugh wants Taylor. However, NFL insider Connor Hughes of SNY explained on Wednesday why it’s not a lock that Taylor will be with the Giants when Week 10 of the season gets underway.
Colts may be willing to hold onto Jonathan Taylor until the new league year opens
“External NFL sources, not from within the Giants building, vary in whether they believe a Taylor trade actually gets done,” Hughes wrote. “Several sources SNY touched base with are hellbent in their conviction that Harbaugh will do whatever he can to get him, seeing an opportunity for New York to make a run. Others, familiar with what the Colts are asking for, believe the price is so steep Indianapolis isn’t actually interested in dealing him. He’ll remain with them throughout this season, with a trade revisited in March. Unless, of course, their price is met.”
The previously mentioned Wednesday story said that “Indianapolis could be holding out for the equivalent of a first-round pick” regarding a potential Taylor trade. Later in the day, Colts head coach Shane Steichen revealed that he plans to play Taylor when 2-6 Indianapolis hosts the 3-5 Dallas Cowboys this coming Sunday.
Could Giants go after other big-name running backs?
According to Hughes, the Giants could “pivot” and pursue a different running back in the event that the Colts don’t lower their asking price for Taylor. Specifically, Breece Hall of the New York Jets and Tony Pollard of the Tennessee Titans have been mentioned as options for teams in need of an RB1.
Recent reports have indicated the Jets want to hold onto Hall. Per Hughes, “the Jets haven’t had realistic conversations about dealing” Hall ahead of Nov. 10.
As for Pollard, it was said this past Tuesday that Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi had “declined to engage in conversations about a potential trade.” According to Hughes, “the Titans aren’t moving Pollard unless they, too, get an offer they can’t refuse.”
The 4-2-1 Giants next play a 2-6 Philadelphia Eagles side that will be starting unproven commodity Joe Milton III at quarterback this coming Sunday. Perhaps Big Blue will be more willing to “overpay” for a lead running back if the club notches a convincing win at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field.
