Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith is expected to be sidelined for multiple games with a “lingering right hamstring injury that initially caused him to miss time during camp,” per Olivia Reiner of The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Smith, 27, should not be out for more than three games with no injured reserve placement expected at the time. That will leave the Eagles without their top receiver in their Week 4 matchup against the Rams and beyond.

Smith’s hamstring has been a problem since the summer. It flared up before last week’s loss to the Bears, but he played regardless and led his team with six catches for 65 yards. That has been a theme of Philadelphia’s offense so far this year following the departure of A.J. Brown. Smith has stepped into the WR1 role with 19 catches for 235 yards through three games, by far the most of any Eagles this year. The 2021 first-round pick has accounted for about one-third of his offense’s targets, receptions, receiving yards, and first downs.

Several of the Eagles’ other pass-catchers are banged up too. Marquise Brown (ankle) and tight end Dallas Goedert (knee) have both been ruled out, which will put Dontayvion Wicks in the No. 1 receiver role on Sunday. He has been an effective deep threat to start the year with 179 yards on nine catches, but reeling in more than 60% of his targets will be vital if he steps into Smith’s role. First-round rookie Makai Lemon, who has just 38 yards on seven catches, should be able to pick up some of Smith’s slack. He may get an opportunity for targets further downfield instead of the underneath role he has filled to start his NFL career.

The 6-foot, 170-pound receiver nicknamed the ‘Slim Reaper’ coming out of Alabama naturally carried some injury concerns into the pros. But he did not miss a single game due to injury in his first three seasons with a four-game absence in 2024 and another full slate of games in 2025. Despite a major role in the Eagles’ offense, including plenty of run-blocking and routes over the middle, he has largely stayed healthy. A strong return this year could be crucial down the stretch in Philly.
