Once again, the New York Giants can’t catch a break at the quarterback position.
Jaxson Dart‘s knee injury may have been more serious than initially expected, with The Athletic now reporting that the second-year quarterback could miss the whole season.
This is an obvious blow to John Harbaugh’s team, especially given that Jameis Winston struggled to push the ball as his replacement.
Considering that, the Giants should strongly consider making a run at J.J. McCarthy.
J.J. McCarthy might be tailor-made for the Giants
While this might sound crazy at first, there’s an obvious Harbaugh connection, as John’s brother, Jim, coached him at Michigan and has vouched for him multiple times.
The Vikings demoted him to third-string quarterback, so they will most likely give him up at a discount just to stop him from being a distraction.
From the Giants’ perspective, he’d probably be the cheapest and most attainable young player they can get at this point in the season.
Moreover, McCarthy would get some much-needed reps to develop and prove to the Giants or any other team that he can still be a franchise quarterback.
He’d essentially be playing with house money, and that should give him the type of freedom a young player needs to take a leap forward and develop.
McCarthy is a former top-10 pick who hasn’t come even close to his prime, and with Dart’s durability concerns, adding another young signal-caller to the mix might not be the wildest thought.
The Giants have a good enough defense to stay competitive with another player under center, and with a former first-rounder potentially up for grabs for pennies on the dollar, John Harbaugh should get his brother on the phone to gather some intel on the Michigan product.
