Sometimes, when a high-profile player arrives on a team and wants a jersey number that’s already taken, it leads to a contentious issue in the locker room, or a high-priced negotiation. That was not the case with the Texans No. 90 jersey.
Logan Hall, who had been No. 90 in Houston for only a few months, gave it to Jadeveon Clowney, who previously wore No. 90 on the Texans from 2014 to 2018, without Clowney even asking for it.
“I walked in, he was like, ‘You can get 90 back,’” Clowney said. “I was like, ‘I don’t even know if I want it’ at first because last time I got injured I wore 90. Ever since I left I’ve been wearing all these different numbers.”
Clowney wore No. 90 from 2014, when the Texans made him the first overall pick in the NFL draft, through 2019, when he was traded to Seattle and played one season for the Seahawks. Clowney also wore No. 90 for two seasons with the Browns, but he has worn other numbers in other places: No. 99 for the Titans, No. 24 for the Ravens, No. 7 for the Panthers and No. 42 for the Cowboys.
Hall, who signed with the Texans this offseason after playing his first four NFL seasons for the Buccaneers, had been wearing No. 90 in Houston just as he did in Tampa Bay. But Hall happily switched to No. 96 to give the No. 90 jersey to Clowney.
Clowney said it’s been fun to see how welcoming the Texans’ locker room is to him.
“It’s been great,” Clowney said. “I’m excited for the opportunity.”
