Jimmy Garoppolo Open To Deal; Giants Could Make Two QB Additions?

With the Giants in position to add a quarterback, many have labeled Jimmy Garoppolo a candidate to be brought into the fold. The veteran passer is open to a deal for 2026.

“I’m ready to play, in the right situation,” Garoppolo said when speaking to The Exhibit’s Josina Anderson. The 34-year-old remained unsigned after his Rams deal expired this spring, and retirement emerged as a possibility. Garoppolo has been open to the idea of playing another NFL campaign, however.

New York lost Jaxson Dart to a knee injury which required surgery. The 2025 first-rounder is in line to miss the remainder of the regular season as a result. Veteran Jameis Winston remains in place, and not long after extending him the Giants plan on having the former No. 1 pick take over starting QB duties. Jake Haener rounds out the current depth chart.

At least one acquisition is widely expected to be made in the near future, although Anderson reports the Giants could bring in two new passers. She adds New York has made efforts to add at least one quarterback earlier than the reported timeline of a Monday arrival. Naturally, the free agent route represents a more viable route than the trade one during the season.

Ralph Vacchiano of Fox Sports adds, to little surprise, the Giants prefer to bring in a quarterback with starting experience. Haener has attempted just 39 regular-season passes in the NFL, so adding veteran insurance behind Winston would be a sensible move. That could of course make Garoppolo – who has made 70 combined starts between the regular and postseason during his career – a logical target. His last stretch of playing time came in 2024 with the Raiders prior to two seasons backing up Matthew Stafford for the Rams.

The Giants have roughly $12MM in cap space at the moment. That should allow for at least one modest signing to add depth under center in the coming days. Garoppolo’s situation (along with the possibility of a second QB acquisition on New York’s part) will be worth watching closely.
