Long before John Harbaugh became the head coach of the New York Giants this past winter, he held that role with the Baltimore Ravens from 2008 through the 2025 season. Thus, Harbaugh is quite familiar with a Ravens side that presumably could become a seller before the NFL trade deadline arrives at 4 p.m. ET on Nov. 10 after Baltimore quarterback Lamar Jackson suffered what could become a season-ending thumb injury this past Sunday.

While speaking with reporters on Monday, Harbaugh was asked whether his relationships in Baltimore could help the Giants complete a noteworthy trade with the AFC North side in the next week.

John Harbaugh: “It’s hard” to make big trades

“I don’t know the answer to that because I think in some ways it makes it easier because it’s an easy call to friends, and I think that’s part of it around the league,” Harbaugh responded, per the Giants’ website. “I mean, it’s a small world, so people call people. …We’re going to do the most we can possibly do to try to get some things done. It’s hard to get deals done. It’s hard. You can see how hard it is, but we’re going to do our best and what’s for our team. And the best thing we can do, the main thing we’re going to do is focus on our guys and get ready to play the game. But all that other stuff is definitely going on behind the scenes at all times.”

Multiple reports had linked the Giants with Indianapolis Colts star running back Jonathan Taylor before a Monday story suggested that Harbaugh could call the Ravens about veteran ball-carrier Derrick Henry. Henry turns 33 years old in January, and none of the $12M attached to his contract for 2027 is guaranteed.

Meanwhile, Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta and team owner Steve Bisciotti could begin preparing for life after Jackson following the signal-caller’s latest significant injury setback. It’s unclear whether DeCosta could make Henry available either before or after 4-4 Baltimore hosts the 5-2 Jacksonville Jaguars this coming Thursday night.

John Harbaugh: “Very important” to think about team chemistry regarding a possible trade

After Big Blue entered its Week 8 bye at 4-2-1, a story noted that “the vibes are really good around the Giants right now.” Harbaugh is aware that making a trade could jeopardize those vibes.

“We got a great camaraderie, a great brotherhood, synergy,” Harbaugh added. “All those things are really, really good right now, and you want to take that into account, even to the point where you probably talk to some of your guys before you did something like that. Make sure that everybody understands, and they’re kind of on board with it.”

The Giants next play at the struggling Philadelphia Eagles (2-6) on Nov. 8. Perhaps the outcome of that game will determine whether or not New York makes a big splash via a trade before the sun sets on Nov. 10.
