Dallas Wings star Paige Bueckers joked about clapping after Caitlin Clark received a technical foul for doing so during the Indiana Fever’s 86-77 win over the Phoenix Mercury on Monday.
“What I’ve learned is clapping is like a non-negotiable,” Bueckers said during a Wednesday appearance on SportsCenter (0:50 mark). “So, I’m gonna try to stay away from clapping. No promises, but I don’t want to keep losing money.”
After Clark and Mercury forward DeWanna Bonner exchanged words in the fourth quarter of Monday’s contest, Clark was given a technical foul after she appeared to clap in the direction of Phoenix’s bench.
She didn’t agree with the call after the game.
“I got a technical for clapping,” Clark said, per CBS Sports’ Jack Maloney. “We should all just go on the calendar now and pick a game that I’m going to be suspended for if I’m gonna get technicals for clapping.”
“I’m gonna play with emotion, I’m gonna play with passion, and if they’re going to give me a technical foul for clapping, then so be it,” she added. “That’s their choice.”
Bueckers experienced a similar situation earlier this season, as she received a technical foul for clapping during Dallas’ 86-69 loss to the Atlanta Dream on May 22. The WNBA later rescinded the techincal.
In 16 games this season, Bueckers is averaging 19.3 points and 6.1 assists per game on 50.2/40.3/82.0 shooting splits.
