The Patriots finally have a deal in place with Christian Gonzalez. The All-Pro cornerback, who had been in talks with the defending AFC champs for most of the offseason, agreed to terms on a four-year extension early Tuesday morning.
Gonzalez and the Pats agreed on a four-year, $135MM pact that includes $102MM guaranteed, NFL insider Jordan Schultz reports. Gonzalez eclipses Devon Witherspoon to become the NFL’s highest-paid cornerback. Gonzalez, who stopped short of guaranteeing he would play in Week 1 without a new deal, made the trip to Seattle. Talks intensified Monday night, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler notes.
Discussions between Gonzalez and the Patriots had quieted recently, Schultz adds, before this seminal reignition. The agreement comes nearly a month after the Seahawks made Witherspoon the league’s highest-paid CB at $33MM per annum.
Gonzalez, who shares an agent with the versatile Seahawks standout, was then connected to wanting an extension that came in well clear of Witherspoon’s. That did not end up coming to fruition, but team and player have a $33.75MM-AAV deal in place that will tie Gonzalez to New England through the 2031 season.
Witherspoon and Trent McDuffie were previously the only corners to score a $100MM guarantee. This will assuredly not represent Gonzalez’s guarantee at signing, as no CB is tied to any full guarantee north of $60MM, but this is a hefty sum. How the deal is structured will, of course, be significant here. But this ends a stalemate that had lasted months.
The Pats are set for their season opener against the Seahawks on Wednesday night, and the subject of a Week 1 deadline loomed in these talks. Gonzalez was not planning to negotiate in-season. This certainly could have been a leverage tactic by a player whose only weapon here would have been withholding services. Even that would have been a risk, as few players have followed through on threats to miss out on game checks.
The Pats, who have been more amenable to big-ticket extensions under GM Eliot Wolf than they were under Bill Belichick, join the Seahawks in having a wide receiver and corner making at least $30MM per year (Seattle’s Witherspoon accord followed Jaxon Smith-Njigba’s, and this Gonzalez agreement comes three-plus months after New England absorbed A.J. Brown’s $32MM-per-year contract).
Belichick’s final first-round pick as Patriots HC/football czar, Gonzalez has rewarded the AFC East franchise. The boundary defender earned second-team All-Pro acclaim in 2024 and was a Pro Bowler during the Patriots’ Super Bowl LX season. The Oregon product’s 2024 breakthrough came after he missed 13 rookie-year games due to a torn labrum. He has grown into one of the NFL’s best corners, representing the centerpiece of Mike Vrabel’s secondary.
Fowler’s annual summer position rankings featured the anonymous execs polled tabbing Gonzalez the NFL’s third-best corner (behind Denver’s Patrick Surtain and Houston’s Derek Stingley Jr.). Gonzalez allowed a career-low 53.6% completion rate as the closest defender last season, and Pro Football Focus has ranked him 14th among CBs in each of his past two campaigns. Surtain’s four-year, $96MM Broncos extension in September 2024 thawed a glacial cornerback market, and action has picked up steadily — to the point Surtain received a summer pay raise this year.
Although Witherspoon and Gonzalez have comparable resumes — and the former offers more versatility by regularly shifting into the slot — Gonzalez had an age advantage in his Pats negotiations. Witherspoon will turn 26 in December; Gonzalez turned 24 in June. Having an extra year of mid-20s work to work into a negotiation matters significantly at corner, when performance is known to decline earlier than at several other spots. Nine of the top 10 highest-paid corners signed their deals before age 30, with Jalen Ramsey (30 at the time he inked a three-year, $72MM Dolphins deal in September 2024) the only exception.
New England has Gonzalez locked in through his age-29 season. That should represent much of the 6-foot-1 cover man’s prime. The fifth-year option, which the Patriots exercised in March, works in the team’s favor here; the extension years do not begin until 2028 because of the option. Gonzalez, of course, will receive a record guarantee in exchange for tying himself to the Pats for this extended period.
Age played into the Patriots’ unwillingness to give former Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore a new deal during Belichick’s final seasons in charge, and the team did not retain Malcolm Butler after his rookie contract expired. The Pats gave Gilmore a raise in 2020 before trading him to the Panthers in 2021. Given a first-round RFA tender in 2017, Butler left as a UFA to join the Titans a year later. New England let Darrelle Revis walk one year into a two-year deal. This is relatively new territory for the modern Patriots, who franchise-tagged Asante Samuel in 2007 and let him walk as a 2008 free agent. (The team did pay Hall of Famer Ty Law, but that six-year deal came in 1999 — before Belichick’s arrival.)
Robert Kraft had said the Pats had offered Gonzalez the richest deal in Patriots history; though, that was a given since Milton Williams’ $26MM-per-year contract carried that title. Wolf, who was working under Belichick when the Pats drafted Gonzalez 17th overall in 2023, said the team had offered its coverage ace market-topping money (though, subsequent pushback emerged on that topic). Gonzalez expressed frustration over the negotiation dragging out as long as it did, but he did not stage a hold-in.
Although a few PFR posts this offseason relayed these two sides were not close, a June report pointed to a deal being completed by Week 1. It took a near-buzzer-beating agreement to accomplish this, but Gonzalez now eclipses Brown as the highest-paid Patriot.
This also continues the 2023 draft class’ record run in terms of early extensions. It marks the 10th player extended from the 2023 first round; it is the first time in the option era the Patriots have agreed to an extension with a first-rounder that had two years of rookie-deal control remaining.
