Ahead of her return to singles competition at Wimbledon on Tuesday, 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams is bringing a different approach to this year’s major tournament.
Williams recently spoke to ESPN’s Malika Andrews and said she expects to take things easy when she returns to the grass.
“As of now, I’m not nervous,” Williams said. “My expectation here is just to take it easy and to be calm and to have fun, which is something I historically have never done, but in a good way. I think my intensity and my passion is always great, but I’ve never just been like, ‘Oh, let’s just have fun.'”
Williams will go up against 20-year-old Australian Maya Joint on Tuesday. She’s also in the doubles competition alongside her older sister, Venus.
Williams also said that chasing a 24th Grand Slam title isn’t part of her motivation at this stage in her career.
Fans will be excited to see Williams and her renewed mindset in her first singles match in nearly four years.
