For two decades, Tom Brady and Bill Belichick had the NFL in a chokehold.
They were the two architects of one of the most feared dynasties in sports history, setting an incredibly high standard for the New England Patriots.
However, things didn’t end too well between the two. And while they’ve buried the hatchet since, they still enjoy taking friendly shots at one another every now and then.
That was the case again during Brady’s commencement speech at Georgetown University’s business school graduation. One more time, his hilarious jabs at his former coach went viral.
Tom Brady takes a subtle dig at Bill Belichick
“I usually don’t do well with compliments. I had a coach for 20 years tell me how [expletive] I was every day,” Brady admitted, per Fox News.
The seven-time Super Bowl champion then continued his speech, motivating people to step out of their comfort zones and work hard toward their goals.
However, that wasn’t the last Belichick reference in his allocution. For those who weren’t paying attention at first, he had another not-so-cryptic dig at his legendary head coach.
“I want you to challenge yourself with ideas that are uncomfortable and people that push you to be your very best,” added Brady. “Even if one of those people is a cranky old coach who cuts the sleeves off his sweatshirt and screams at you all day, ‘Do your job.’ Okay that’s too specific.”
At the end of the day, it seems like Brady holds bragging rights over Belichick.
He won another Super Bowl with another franchise and another head coach as soon as he left Foxborough, all while Belichick has struggled mightily to get back on his feet.
Still, there’s no way to take anything away from one of the brightest minds to ever do it, and he deserves as much credit as his quarterback what they accomplished in those two decades.
