Tua Tagovailoa is going to get another chance to create some separation in Atlanta’s quarterback competition.
Head coach Kevin Stefanski said in his Wednesday press conference that Tagovailoa will start Friday’s preseason matchup with the Broncos. But Stefanski said he’s not ready to name a starter for Week 1.
“Looking forward to Tua getting his first action in the game in this system,” Stefanski said. “There’s a lot of newness for him as well, in terms of that kind of thing — first time in the building for him as a Falcon. Just understanding all the things that go with it.”
Stefanski noted that the starters will play a series or around 10 plays in the contest.
Cooper Rush will play after Tagovailoa and Jack Strand will play third at quarterback.
Tagovailoa has been “competing” with Michael Penix Jr. throughout the offseason. But that’s been complicated by Penix’s health, as the quarterback is not yet fully cleared after tearing his ACL last November.
Penix is still not slated to do 11-on-11 team drills next week when the Falcons go to practice with the Colts.
