The Minnesota Vikings have two main quarterbacks in the fold for the 2026 season in veteran Kyler Murray and 2024 first-round pick J.J. McCarthy, and the two are duking it out to win the starting position with the franchise. Both players have their strengths and weaknesses, so this summer is a crucial time for Murray and McCarthy to prove their value.

Murray has been on the field with the Vikings for the first time this month, and he’s sharing his thoughts on how it’s going. This week, the quarterback shared an honest take about the challenges he’s facing getting used to the team’s offense.

The Vikings and Cardinals offensive lines are totally different, so it makes sense that there’s a learning curve for Murray. But, his latest comments may raise some eyebrows. On Tuesday, Murray told the media that sharing reps is making it more difficult for him to learn the offense, because he doesn’t get as much time with them.

Kyler Murray says sharing reps is making his job a bit tougher

“I think the toughest part is, again, I was [in Arizona] for seven years,” Murray told reporters. “I know I had two different offensive systems. But at the same time, you’re getting all those reps, you know, now having to split reps. Me already being behind, not getting the amount of reps that, you know, you would typically want a guy to get [while] learning an offense.”

He added about the situation: “That’s probably the toughest part, just, again, going back to the past, being in control of everything, understanding what we were already doing, because I was comfortable within the system. Now I’m coming into the new system, learning on the fly, trying to play fast, efficient, and then let it loose while learning.”

So, Murray is learning on the fly, and having to split time with McCarthy isn’t making his job easier. But, as a veteran with years of NFL experience, it’s nothing he can’t overcome.
