The Minnesota Vikings have their starting quarterback in Kyler Murray. It’s official. He’ll get the start when September rolls around, and now the future of J.J. McCarthy in Minnesota is really in question.
But just because Murray is getting the start, that doesn’t mean he can relax. Just the opposite. Remember the saying, “To the victor go the spoils.” Well, that’s the case here.
In a feature published on Tuesday by CBS Sports, Zachary Pereles puts Murray firmly in the hot seat. He has a lot to prove. This is his chance to show that he’s worthy of being a real franchise quarterback in the NFL.
Vikings’ Kyler Murray has something to prove
“Kyler Murray winning the Vikings’ starting quarterback job wasn’t a surprise, but it wasn’t the smoothest sailing, either,” Pereles states. “Now, the 2019 No. 1 overall pick has a chance to resurrect his career in the best situation of his career: Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison at wide receiver, a solid projected offensive line and Kevin O’Connell dialing up plays.”
There’s hope. Pereles points out that “Murray will have his ups and downs in individual games, but generally, he has been pretty steady. Even at his worst, he has been miles better than the Vikings quarterbacks were last year. Murray playing from under center and throwing over the middle of the field are keys here.”
In the end, Pereles notes he could play well and score that big contract after the season is over, or “there’s also a legit chance he struggles and his time as a meaningful NFL starter gets even closer to its end.”
Vikings fans are hoping for the former.
