The Cleveland Browns’ quarterback competition involving Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders had an interesting twist when Tony Grossi of ESPN Cleveland/The Land on Demand reported that the club could be interested in Texas Tech Red Raiders signal-caller
Brendan Sorsby if he were to enter this year’s supplemental draft for the NFL.
It sounds like Browns supporters who are Sorsby fans may want to put such dreams to bed.
Browns focusing on this amid Brendan Sorsby rumors, competition involving Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson
During a Thursday appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” NFL insider Peter Schrager of ESPN shared that “there will be interest in” Sorsby among teams if he declares for the supplemental draft. However, Schrager added that he has been told that “Sorsby’s name has not been in the conversation” within the Browns’ facility this spring.
“They’re focusing on what they have in-house at the moment,” Schrager said in reference to the Browns’ Watson-versus-Sanders battle.
Sorsby recently checked into a residential treatment program to deal with a gambling addiction, and reports have indicated he could look to enter this summer’s supplemental draft if he is deemed ineligible to play for the upcoming college season. While the Browns are among the teams that theoretically could take a flier on Sorsby via the supplemental draft, Schrager poured cold water over the idea.
Why the Browns, other teams may not be ready to make a final Brendan Sorsby call
A Wednesday report revealed that multiple state gaming regulators had launched investigations into Sorsby’s alleged gambling activities. Additionally, it’s possible that any ban he receives as a college athlete would carry over to the NFL, similar to what then-Raiders rookie quarterback Terrelle Pryor experienced in 2011.
“I don’t know if Sorsby being dropped into it is an actual legitimate thing right now,” Schrager added about the Browns’ quarterback situation.
For now, Sanders will be able to focus on trying to decrease Watson’s alleged lead in Cleveland’s quarterback competition before players begin their summer breaks in June.
