There is an interesting dynamic with the Cleveland Browns‘ quarterback situation, and it really started to show itself on Thursday night in their preseason finale against the New England Patriots.
Dillon Gabriel got the start for the Browns, and put together the team’s most impressive quarterback showing all preseason by going 12-of-15 for 186 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions in his one half of work.
It brings up what should be a very relevant question — why shouldn’t he enter the season as the team’s second-string quarterback behind Deshaun Watson and be the next in line to start?

All of this is being said with the obvious grain of salt that preseason stats and individual performances are not always the best indicator of what a player is capable of or will do when the real games start.
The level of competition is not always the best, and it certainly was not on Thursday as the Patriots mostly played second- and third-stringers (and probably a lot of fourth-stringers).
But the Browns were not playing many players who are going to be top contributors, either.
It also runs deeper than just one preseason game.
