Every NFL season produces at least a few head coaches entering the year with serious pressure surrounding their future, and the 2026 season is no different. With OTAs underway and expectations rising across the NFL, some organizations are clearly entering the season knowing anything short of a deep playoff run could lead to major changes on the sidelines.

Zac Taylor is on the hot seat

Perhaps no head coach in the NFL faces more pressure entering the 2026 season than Zac Taylor. Taylor currently holds a 49-66-1 overall record during his time with the Cincinnati Bengals and is coming off a disappointing 6-11 season in 2025. While he led the Bengals to a Super Bowl earlier in his tenure, the Bengals are currently on a three-year playoff drought.

One of the biggest reasons why Cincinnati was so poor last season was due to its defense. The Bengals ranked 30th in total defense allowing almost 380 yards per game. Opposing offenses consistently controlled the tempo against Cincinnati, especially late in games, as the Bengals struggled to generate pressure and force turnovers.

If the Bengals once again fail to compete for a playoff spot despite the talent on the roster, serious questions are going to start surrounding whether Taylor is still the right coach to maximize Joe Burrow’s prime years.

Dan Quinn facing higher expectations in Washington

After guiding the Washington Commanders to their first NFC Championship appearance in over 30 years during the 2024 season, Dan Quinn comes into 2026 with greater expectations. Currently, Quinn has a record of 17-17 through two seasons as the Commanders head coach, but last season was a tough one as Jayden Daniels missed time with injury. However, with Daniels fully healthy for the season opener and the Commanders improving the defense through the addition of Sonny Styles, Odafe Oweh, Charles Omenihu and Leo Chenal, expectations have quickly climbed.

The Commanders ranked 30th in the league against the run, as they allowed 141.8 rushing yards per game and ranked 29th in the league against the pass allowing 249 passing yards per game during the 2025 season.

Washington is no longer being viewed as a rebuilding team, so another bad year with a healthy Daniels would likely mean major scrutiny for Quinn and the franchise going forward.

Todd Bowles needs to course correct in Tampa

Entering 2026, Todd Bowles holds a regular-season record of 35-33 as the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. During Bowles’ tenure, the Bucs earned three consecutive NFC South titles from 2022-2024. But the 2025 season felt like a step back after the Bucs went from a 6-2 start all the way to an 8-9 finish, narrowly missing the playoffs.

Perhaps the largest problem for Bowles at this point is simply the narrative within the organization. Gone are the days of the veterans that carried the franchise in the Tom Brady years, and the landscape of the NFC South is changing rapidly. A disappointing 2026 campaign, lacking improvement or development, could cause ownership to realize they need a change in command at some point.

Several NFL coaches entering critical 2026 season

A few NFL coaches enter 2026 on notice. From Taylor looking to make the most of Burrow’s championship window, to Quinn looking to demonstrate that Washington’s turnaround was not a one-year fluke, or Bowles trying to keep Tampa Bay in playoff contention. Many NFL head coaches enter the 2026 season with heightened expectations. The NFL rarely exercises patience, and another dismal year could readily lead to large-scale organizational changes.
